In the dead of the dark northern Swedish winter Inspector Torsson is informed that local artist and teacher Matti Olsson has been killed, forcing Torsson to a 25-mile trek on skis across a frozen lake.
When Torsson arrives the villagers are unforthcoming, their stories do not match and odd details appear. The fearful cold seems to be the only obvious reason for Olsson's death.
By chance the case is reopened when someone discovers a bag containing a bloody noose covered with human hair. Torsson is forced to return to the isolated community, now immersed in oppressive sunlight. Slowly and agonizingly he makes his way into the peculiar psychology of people who live half their lives in darkness, cut off from the rest of the world.
