Lars Kepler

Lars Kepler’s debut The Hypnotist was an immediate success in his native Sweden. But as no photos existed of the new crime fiction star, rumors started spinning about Lars Kepler’s true identity.

British press made it known that Lars Kepler was not a real person, but a pseudonym used by Henning Mankell to efficiently kill off Kurt Wallander and launch a new crime series. New York Times, on the other hand, suggested that Lars Kepler is an "author-bot engineered by the Swedes to further their takeover of the global publishing industry".

While Henning Mankell had to publicly deny any involvement in The Hypnotist, the stories in British media actually had some merit as it turned out Lars Kepler actually is pseudonym, used by the husband and wife team Alexander and Alexandra Ahndoril. And as Scandinavian crime fiction founders Sjowall and Wahloo have proven, this type of team work can certainly deliver intriguing results.

Lars Kepler's protagonist is Stockholm police inspector Joona Linna, a fearless, quiet Finnish-Swedish man driven by a traumatic past.

The Hypnotist was named one of the ten best crime novels of 2011 by Wall Street Journal.
