A patient at a Stockholm hospital is brutally murdered. The patient turns out to be a police officer named Stig Nyman. When Martin Beck starts investigating the crime he discovers that Stig Nyman was far from a perfect police officer, and that Nyman’s violent methods had given him numerous enemies.
Is the murder a cold-blooded revenge? As Martin Beck tries to narrow down the list of suspects a heavily armed man climbs up on a roof in central Stockholm and starts shooting at innocent passers by down on the streets.
