Sjöwall-Wahlöö, The Fire Engine That Disappeared
"A 'police procedural' from the top drawer."
- Colin Dexter
The Fire Engine That Disappeared is the fifth book in Sjöwall-Wahlöö's Martin Beck Police Mystery series.
An explosive fire in a Stockholm apartment is initially thought to be the result of gas stove suicide. A cryptic suicide note is found, consisting of only two words: “Martin Beck”.
What bothers Martin Beck is that the fire engine that was sent to the fire never showed up. And when the forensic team discovers the remnants of a firebomb in the apartment rubble the investigators have to ask themselves: Are they dealing with a gas leak accident, a suicide, a murder - or an act of terrorism?
As Beck starts putting together the clues, the only person who can help the investigators answer these questions is found dead at the bottom of the sea.
