Sjöwall-Wahlöö, The Laughing Policeman
"Tantalizing...the splendid story of an apparently
clueless crime."
- The New York Times Book Review
The Laughing Policeman is the fourth book in the Martin Beck Police Mystery series. This book won Mystery Writers of America The Edgar’s Award for Best Novel in 1971. It remains the only novel in translation ever to have won the award.
A night bus crashes in a quiet part of Stockholm. Eight of the nine onboard are dead, one is dying. But none of them was injured in the crash; they were all murdered - mown down by machine-gun.
Adding to the chocking news is the discovery that one of the victims is inspector Stenstrom, one of Beck’s colleagues. Was it a dreadful coincident that he was part of the buss massacre, or was he working on a case? Beck and his team start retracing Stenstrom's steps chasing clues several years old, leading them to a crime long thought unsolvable.
