Sjöwall-Wahlöö, The Man Who Went Up in Smoke
"Classic police fiction...they changed the genre."
- Henning Mankell
The Man Who Went Up in Smoke is the second book in Sjöwall-Wahlöö's Martin Beck Policy Mystery series.
Martin Beck’s vacation is abruptly terminated when the Swedish journalist Alf Matsson suddenly disappears. The case is given high priority as Alf Matsson and his publisher seem to know something that potentially could embarrass the Swedish government.
Beck is sent to Budapest since the traces of Matsson end there. The Hungarian police deny any involvement in Matsson’s disappearance, yet Beck constantly senses that somebody is following him. The investigation takes Beck into the Eastern European underworld and the international implications grow with each new clue.
